The Power of Affirmations

I remember when I first started in business how I really thought that leadership was a crafty usage of memorized techniques. Fortunately, I quickly realized that “consistent work effort” was the most important challenge! I was determined to master this sales and management profession by learning from those who were some of the best. One of the most significant techniques I learned was the consistent use of “Affirmations.”

Now, I’m sure most of you have had some experience with affirmations, but here is a short definition of the technique. An affirmation is, “A short one line statement that declares a significant truth to remember.” Why is it so important to remember “a significant truth?” When a significant truth, like an affirmation, becomes a permanent part of your thinking, it automatically becomes a stimulus for your positive thinking processes. That is the power of an affirmation!

As your brain focuses on consistent, significant and relevant truth, it is received and accepted as your personal truth! In other words, the brain accepts the affirmation as your personal reality. Your actions are now directed by what you have accepted as truth, and that truth is adopted as a benchmark for personal actions.

I have always used affirmations because they seem to build steadfastness of consistent thought in difficult life situations. A few years back I compiled a card deck of my most utilized life affirmations. It’s a deck of 52 cards, one card for each week of the year, which reveal my most affirming concepts. I have selected three of my personal affirmations that I have used for confirmation in difficult times, for encouragement and instruction when I needed to stand “tough.” You are welcome to adopt any of these for your personal use, and we also have my lifetime collection for sale on our web site.

Here are my top three affirmations:

  1. “I never depend on external circumstances to confirm my BELIEF!”

So many people, trying to make it in a tough, competitive environment, quit when things get difficult. This affirmation has encouraged me to hang in there, no matter what the circumstances!

  1. “I live life Inside out, rather than Outside In!”

I must remember that when I maintain a stable, positive, internal belief system, my confidence assures me that I can handle most anything life can throw at me!

  1. “Adversity is my friend and compassionate teacher!”

I think many leaders actually fear “Adversity”.  I don’t really enjoy adversity, but I am aware that I should never fear or expect to avoid it. Years ago, I developed this affirmation to remind myself of how I should view hardship. Over time, this affirmation taught me to see any struggle or difficulty as a compassionate teacher working in my best interest.

I encourage you to seriously consider using affirmations yourself. They have made a significant difference in both my business and personal life.

Until next time, may God Bless!
