The Most Important Collaboration

I want to talk to you all about COLLABORATION! By collaboration, I mean partnerships or relationships. We know that we all have various collaborations in both our personal and professional lives, and these associations play a vital role.

Who would you say are the three most important collaborations in your life?

Some of you may have thought about spouses/significant others, children, parents, business partners, God, etc., and all of those are very important in your life. However, did you think about YOUR MIND? I believe the association between you and your mind is one of the most important alliances. When you can collaborate with your mind and tell it what you want, you can get what you want! This is much more than positive thinking. It is collaboration, and collaboration takes some love, time and attention! So, when it comes to collaboration with our mind, I want you to be aware of a few key things:

Your brain wants to be RIGHT!

Your mind does exactly what it thinks you want it to do. It uses your words, your internal self-talk. So, you might be saying things like:

I’m overwhelmed.

I can’t cope with the stress.

I don’t have enough time.

I will never make it to my next level.

I am not a morning person.

Any of these sound familiar? Your mind wants to be right, so on a subconscious level, your mind will create the EXACT scenarios for you to be RIGHT. If you say, “I would love a week off lounging around”. The next thing you know you have the flu, and there’s your week off lounging around! You get what your mind thinks you want.

I suggest you start thinking about and telling yourself what you DO want to happen in your life. Most of us spend the majority of time thinking about what we don’t want to happen. When it comes to doing those things we don’t like to do, but we know we need to do (i.e., working out, getting up early, eating healthy, etc.), tell yourself, “I have chosen this”. Telling yourself this moves you away from being the victim and empowers you towards doing the things you know you need to do. From now on, use the words, “I have chosen to do this”. It will change your life!

Your mind wants to keep you safe!

Our brain’s job is not to make sure we’re happy but to simply make sure we survive. That is why we have these natural human instincts; they are designed to keep us safe. Therefore, we instinctively interpret sameness as security. So, when we try something new (like working out in the morning or implementing a system of personal management), often times it works well for a few days or weeks, but then we retreat back to our comfort zones. If you want to reach your next level, you need to know that success does not rest in your comfort zones!

Your brain is hard-wired to move you towards pleasure and away from pain; your mind wants to keep you safe. So I want you to think about some things that may have caused you pain in the past. Perhaps you have eaten something, and it makes you sick; you can never eat it again. Your mind associates that food with being sick. Maybe a long time ago (even childhood), you stumbled on some words during a public appearance, and you now have a fear of public speaking because you associate public speaking with PAIN.

Your mind will always move you towards pleasure and away from pain. So what do YOU link to pain? Working out, getting up early, eating healthy, meditation, etc.?

Have you ever thought about why the Army and Marines sing while running or doing intense workouts? Yes, it helps with cadence, but it also makes the soldier’s mind think the soldier likes it. Researchers have discovered that singing is like a tranquilizer in that it soothes your nerves and elevates your spirits. So, by singing while doing the painful stuff, the Marines are linking pleasure to these intense workouts instead of pain.

YOU are the only one who can choose pleasure or pain! YOU have to link PLEASURE to things that you may consider difficult, but that you want in life.

Stay tuned for next month’s blog, where I will build on what we’ve discussed here and share a few more things about collaborating with your mind! Until then, start increasing your awareness around one of our most important collaborations – your MIND!
